Cairns Fishing Report | April 17th

With another week of uncertain weather and persistent south east winds, a few windows of opportunity opened up for the keen anglers who stuck it out. From Spaniards firing up again through to large barramundi in the salt there has been some quality fish caught.

Reef Fishing

Glamour conditions turned it on for a good couple days there where boats hitting the reef managed to score some great mixed bags. Spanish mackerel have been getting caught consistently on the troll as this cool change has started to come through, as well as some beautiful coral trout, spangled emperor and large mouth nannygai and all the other goodies in between.

Game Fishing

A few of the Cairns game fishing anglers made their way over to Kimbe over in Papua New Guinea for the PNG National Titles earlier in the month. The boat "Drug Runner" managed to take out champion positions in many of the categories they attempted seeing many bill fish captured.

Locally, yellow fin tuna are still out wide with anglers getting some on the troll for mackerel or even casting into the schools busting up. It won't be far off and whispers of long tail tuna will start to be told and light casting outfits will have the dust and cob webs blown off to go chase these line burners.

Rivers, Estuaries and Beaches

The inlet has been seeing many large barramundi over the metre mark recently as anglers keen to brave the wind or rain are getting their prized catch. Solid numbers of jacks have been caught throughout the mangroves where deeper divers have been hitting the schools and convincing a few to have a chew.

Freshwater and Dams

The young guns venturing on foot have been pulling great sized sooty grunters, jungle perch, even the odd freshwater mangrove jack walking the almost gin clear streams. As the river heights and rain has dropped from the floods and school holidays on the roll, I'm sure we will see many more captures from these young anglers.

Tinaroo has been fishing well with many large barramundi firing up as the weather starts to shift to the chilly foggy nights again. With water levels still relatively high the barramundi can push right up into the weed edges, weedless plastics could see you some hungry barramundi if you persist!
