Cairns Fishing Report | March 20th

Another day in the tropics sees us experiencing a mix of weather conditions leaving anglers small windows to get out on the water. This week dodging the rain showers and finding some sunny patches a few fishos hit the water and still managed to find some good fish.

Reef Fishing

Few anglers braved the rolling storms out at the reef and managed to find some good reef fish in between the rain showers. With some good catches fishing wonky holes and rubble patches there were some solid catches of large mouth nannygai, and coral trout amongst the reef edges and bombies.

Game Fishing

Some nice Spanish mackerel were caught during a calm spot in the conditions during the week caught trolling Halco Lazer Pro lures around inshore wonky holes and wrecks.

Rivers, Estuaries and Beaches

The Trinity Inlet in Cairns has fished well this week with anglers hitting the water doing some skip casting. Using frogs and paddle tails right in the mangrove edges finding snags and overhangs with plenty of action from mangrove jacks and barras. With the pressure drops and raises from passing storms this often gets the fish into ambush zones and looking up for things falling in the water with the wind and rain bugs, frogs and crabs often become a menu item during these events.

Weekend Outlook

Due to a tropical cyclone passing the coast in the northern reaches will possibly bring storm surges and wind and rain events so may be best for anglers to just go by conditions if they say so do so. For those that do brave conditions may find barras and jacks pushing up into the swollen tops of rivers and creeks looking to find new grounds and food sources skip casting frogs and soft plastics being a lure of choice for these conditions.
